What to do after experiencing a loss

Experiencing a loss can be stressful. To make things easier and remove some of the guesswork, here are the key steps to follow:

Ensure safetyWhile most losses don’t involve injuries or criminal activity, some do—in these cases, call 911. Stay calm, courteous, and avoid arguing with others involved. Make sure you and all involved persons are away from any potential sources of danger such as live lanes of traffic, fire, etc. Never stand between vehicles following a collision.

Document the incident thoroughlyDocument everything in full detail, including dates, times, and location. Gather contact information from all persons involved in the incident, including witnesses. If possible, take photographs and videos of the scene and damage.

Avoid settlement discussionsDetails of the incident should only be discussed with police, emergency personnel, and your Federated claims adjuster.

How does it work? After being in an auto accident, you will give the Federated claims team a call. A link will be sent directly to your smartphone, prompting you to snap some photos of the damage to your vehicle. Then, simply tap to send them back to your claims adjuster in real time. Your adjuster will get started on your appraisal. While you wait, your adjuster can help you find one of our preferred collision centers for repairs and arrange a rental if necessary. You’ll receive a call to outline your settlement details. You’ll be back on the road before you know it!
